The OAA presented Research Fellowships (FOAA) to Dr. Earl Smith III and Patrick Caroline at Vision By Design 2010 held in Chicago Oak Brook October 20-24, 2010. The awards were presented at the gala dinner of the academy attended by close to two hundred people. The two recipients were honored for their contributions to research in the field of corneal reshaping. Dr. Smith is one of the leading researchers in myopia and its development and has shown a causative relationship between the progression of myopia and the peripheral retina in primates. His research is leading to the optimization of design choices in the field of corneal reshaping to limit myopic progression in adolescents. Patrick Caroline through his research at The University of Pacific College Of Optometry has led to new corneal reshaping designs for myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. In addition to the Research Fellowship Patrick Caroline was also presented with the "Outstanding Achievement in Orthokeratology" award in recognition of his tireless efforts in bringing corneal reshaping to eye carecommunity around the globe.
